The Hundred Mile Wilderness was my very first attempt at a thru-hike. It was my long trail shakedown, and it hurt. I carried all the wrong gear and totally over-estimated my abilities. My shin splints were so bad by the time I reached the foot of Katahdin that I abandoned my ambition to finish for fear of an injury. I learned a lot on that walk and had a wonderfully successful thru-hike on the PCT the following summer as a result. Finally came back to walk the HMW in all its fall glory four years after my failed attempt back in 2013. And I’m so glad I did.
